Product information

Choosing the right log splitter depends on the size, hardness, and moisture content of the wood you plan to split. Bilt Hard offers a range of log splitters from a 6.5-ton electric model to a heavy-duty 40-ton gas-powered splitter. But how do you determine which tonnage is right for you? Let’s break it down.

Factors That Affect Splitting Force
1. Type of Wood: Hard vs. Softwood
  • Softwoods (Pine, Fir, Cedar, Spruce) – Easier to split, requiring lower tonnage.

  • Hardwoods (Oak, Hickory, Maple, Ash) – Denser and tougher to split, requiring higher tonnage.

2. Log Diameter
  • Small logs (under 6-8 inches) – Lower tonnage is sufficient.

  • Medium logs (8-12 inches) – Mid-range tonnage is recommended.

  • Large logs (12+ inches) – Heavy-duty splitters are needed.

3. Log Length
  • Most residential log splitters handle logs up to 24 inches long.

  • For longer logs, ensure the splitter can accommodate the size.

4. Wood Moisture Content
  • Green (freshly cut) wood is harder to split and requires more force.

  • Seasoned wood (dried for 6+ months) is easier to split.

Choosing the Right Tonnage
Log Splitter Tonnage     Best For
6.5-Ton Electric Log Splitter Small softwood logs (under 10 inches)
20-Ton Gas Log Splitter Medium-sized logs (up to 12 inches), some hardwoods
25-Ton Horizontal/Vertical Gas Log Splitter Larger logs (12-18 inches), hardwoods
30-Ton Horizontal/Vertical Gas Log Splitter Large, tough logs (18+ inches)
35-Ton Horizontal/Vertical Gas Log Splitter Extra-large logs, green hardwoods
40-Ton Horizontal/Vertical Gas Log Splitter The most demanding jobs, knotty and oversized logs
Horizontal vs. Vertical Splitting
  • Horizontal Mode: Best for smaller logs that can be lifted onto the splitter.

  • Vertical Mode: Ideal for large, heavy logs that are difficult to lift.

  • Horizontal & Vertical Combined: Offers the flexibility to switch between modes, making it perfect for handling logs of all sizes with ease.
Electric vs. Gas Log Splitters
  • Electric Splitters (6.5-ton) – Ideal for residential use, quiet, no fumes, suitable for smaller logs.

  • Gas Splitters (20-40 ton) – More power, portable, better for large logs and remote locations.

Final Thoughts

If you are splitting small, softwood logs for occasional use, a 6.5-ton electric splitter will suffice. If you frequently split large logs, especially hardwoods, a 25-ton or higher gas-powered model is recommended. For the toughest jobs, the 40-ton splitter is your best bet.

What great product

What great product. Perfect for doing what I bought it for. Logs I am splitting are between 6”-10” and handles it very well. Only draw back is you have to use both hands to operate. Perfect price point for splitting for fire pit at home

New 40 ton log splitter

Arrived 2 days late. Transport company kept me up to date. Shipped in plywood crate. Assembly wasn't difficult. 40 ton ram and beam very heavy. Definitely need assistance to mount on wheel base. Engine rear mounting bolts a tight squeeze to place...but I got them in. Fluids filled. 2 pulls and ran great. Well manufactured item. Test split a log, easy peasy. I have a lot of Ash logs to split. It'll be a back saver for sure. Great splitter, great price. Larger engine than most 37 ton splitters!

Heavy unit with good running engine.

Heavy unit that needs put together. Wheel bearings are installed and are behind seal. They must be removed and packed as grease was just wiped on them. Engine was all ready just add fuel. Started on third pull and runs well so far. If your older it is harder to start as engine is larger cubic inch. Have not got to lumber pile yet but should do fine.

This thing is a beast

This thing is a beast.
It arrived within days of ordering it. Mine came in a crate and included everything needed except for the gasoline. We assembled in just over an hour, added the included oil and hydraulic fluid and it fired on the first pull, well once I realized it had an on off switch lol.
We’ve used it twice and it chews thru some very large pecan logs that are often knotty and gnarly.
Great experience. Highly recommend this splitter without hesitation.

Strong but a bit sluggish.

I love this little splitter. It has cracked through some twisted and knotty Red Oak with very little struggle.

The only downsides are the speed and the fact that you need to use both hands at the same time and can’t control the log.

Neither of these are deal breakers for me. Very big value for the money!

Great Machine

You can buy this log splitter for less than six one-day rentals of the same size unit. FedEx delivered three boxes weighing 137, 72 and 135 pounds each. Hydraulic fluid and engine oil are included. Excellent packing, each box had plywood on all sides. Our only assembly issue was that the threads on the hydraulic reservoir were painted. We wire brushed the threads but still had a hard time getting the threads on the low pressure hose to engage. Recommend removing the low pressure hose from the control valve, then attach the other end to the reservoir. Then reconnect to the control valve. This made it much easier to start the threads over the paint.

Log splitter 30 ton

I Am 66, I was able to unpack and build by myself. Not easy, 2 people would be easier. I installed the stock wood shelves and split half a cord. I promptly moved the larger tray to the operators side and added an aftermarket tray on the far side. Love the splitter well balanced and fast. The hydraulic oil that came with it was about a gallon short of filling . Would i buy again? Absolutely. I have ordered a manual tube i will install and place manuals inside so they are always with the machine. If it lasts 30 years like my last one it is an awesome splitter.

Should have bought this years ago!

I'm turning 70 in July, and my days of swinging a maul are behind me, so we bought the Bilt Hard splitter a week ago and haven't looked back. My wife and I put it together in just a few hours, with the help of a YouTube video and some leveraged lifting. The way it was packaged and presented made the process fun. We've had the chance to use it twice now, and it makes child's-play of splitting the most enormous wheels we have. One of the most outstanding features is that it tilts vertically so we can roll the biggest logs under it without lifting them, and it splits them easily. It starts with a single pull and purrs like a kitten when running. My only regret is that we didn't buy one sooner. I can't recommend this machine highly enough to express how much I enjoy it. I'd give it more than 5 stars if I could.

split anything

It did take some time to assemble, but once it's done, all worth it. This thing surprised the heck out of me. It can split anything I throw at it. I had 20/22 diameter wood rounds with knots, V shaped, and Y shaped wood and it had no problem. A Very happy owner so far.

WORLD'S GREATEST ELECTRIC LOG SPLITTER

My Bilt Hard electric log splitter that has served me extremely well for I think 4 years now. I've done at least 8 cords of hardwoods. Some of it was 24 inch rounds. No problems. I love it. If you have a problem with rounds slipping off the ram, I welded a castle nut to the center. No more slips. ALSO, using a chain saw, cut an X, 2 or 3 inches deep across one end of large rounds and place the slot into the wedge end of splitter you will find it much easier to split those big guys. Have fun! PHOTO IS OF 1/2 OF SECOND CORD FOR THIS FALL. 1 DAYS WORK WITH THIS GREAT SPLITTER. WOOD SHED( 1 CORD) IS ALREADY FULL

Efficient & mini mighty splitter

If you're on the fence if you should go rent a splitter from the hardware store, or add this to your garage - add this to your garage. It's done a great job tackling knotty pine and aspen for me. You will have to work in close proximity to an outlet - but you'll be pleased with its performance. It's got a nice small footprint when you do end up storing it.My only gripe was with the delivery service. My splitter's packaging looked like it had a *rough* journey to my door. That said - zero complaints with the tool.

Works Well

This may be the first review I have ever written for anything. I purchased this splitter in May of 2022. Surprisingly powerful and easy to use. I have split several cord. All hardwood. Maple, oak cherry and ash. I had no trouble splitting 10 inch diameter logs as well as some larger. I hesitated a bit on the 5 star rating because the knobs on the bleeder screw and the set screw that adjusts the length of the piston stroke broke almost immediately. (see photos). Not all that unusual when working with this kind of equipment. Would recommend it to a friend.

This thing is a BEAST

This wood splitter exceeded my expectations. Easy to operate and more power than I expected.Push a button to engage the motor and push down a lever to engage the hydraulic slave cylinder.Knots were a problem but I worked around them. I would say easily splits logs up to 13 inches.A real beast for the money.

Works great it's a little monster

I wasn't thrilled about the two handed controls but my hand is big enough to run this with one hand. It works well for me and I am enjoying it

This Log Splitter is Great!!

I just spent about 2 hours splitting this wood over the weekend. Some of the wood was hard to split due to the knots in it, but the splitter did a great job on all the rest. The effort to work the splitter is so easy, now I don't have to have a soar back, arms, hands. After I was done, I just unplugged the splitter and put it into the shed until the next time I need it. The other half of the split wood is already in my rack covered and ready to use this summer and fall.
