Choose your sawmill based on four factors: the largest logs you expect to mill, the widest boards or slabs you want to produce, your typical log length, and how frequently you plan to operate the mill.

The 22" model is a practical entry point for property maintenance, DIY building, and smaller logs. The 26" model adds more engine power and capacity for regular homestead or farm use. The 32" models are better suited to larger timber and wide live-edge projects, while the 36" model provides the greatest cutting capacity for oversized logs and longer material.

If your logs regularly approach a model’s maximum diameter, move up to the next size. Extra clearance makes it easier to handle bark, knots, bends, and irregularly shaped logs.

Maximum log diameter refers to the largest round log that can physically fit between the sawmill’s structure and blade system.

Maximum cutting width—sometimes called maximum live-edge width—is the widest board or slab the blade can produce after entering the log. This measurement is often smaller than the maximum log diameter because space is occupied by the blade guides, sawhead structure, bark, and the round shape of the log.

BILT HARD portable sawmills can process common hardwoods and softwoods when the logs are within the rated capacity of the selected model. However, dense, dry, wide, knotty, or irregular hardwood logs generally require a slower and steadier feed rate.

A larger engine can help maintain cutting speed and improve productivity on bigger logs, but horsepower alone does not guarantee a straight or smooth cut. Blade sharpness, blade tension, track alignment, log stability, lubrication, wood condition, and operator feed rate are equally important.

Maximum log length depends on the usable cutting length of the standard track—not the track’s total physical length. Additional space is required for the sawhead to enter the log, complete the cut, and travel beyond the end of the material.

Compatible track extensions can increase cutting length for longer beams, siding, structural lumber, and custom projects. Always verify that the extension matches your exact sawmill model and confirm what clamps, bunks, supports, or connecting hardware are included.

Do not assume that two sawmills with similar total track lengths have the same usable log capacity.

A standard sawmill listing generally includes the sawhead and its standard ground-mounted track configuration. Selected bundles may also include replacement blades, a compatible track extension, or both.

Track-extension listings contain extension components and do not include a complete sawmill. Trailer combo kits add a mobile platform or trailer structure but do not include the sawmill unless the product title specifically states otherwise.

Review the product title, model compatibility, and “What’s Included” section before ordering. A trailer package should not be assumed to be ready for public-road towing unless the listing expressly confirms the required lighting, wiring, tires, registration components, and applicable road-use compliance.

Straight, consistent lumber starts with a firm, level foundation. The track must be properly supported and aligned, and the log must remain securely clamped throughout the cut.

Blade sharpness, correct blade tension, blade-guide adjustment, lubrication, and a smooth feed rate also help reduce blade wandering, vibration, and uneven board thickness.

Remove as much dirt, sand, stones, and loose bark as practical before milling. Embedded metal, dirty bark, and contaminated logs can quickly dull or damage a blade. Blade life varies significantly with wood species, log cleanliness, blade maintenance, feed rate, and operating conditions, so there is no single guaranteed number of cuts per blade.

Portable sawmills require a firm, level work area with enough space to stage logs, remove finished boards, and safely move around the machine. Complete all assembly, alignment, lubrication, and pre-operation inspections described in the owner’s manual before starting the engine.

These are manually operated sawmills. The operator is responsible for loading, positioning, clamping, and turning the logs. Depending on log size and site conditions, you may need a cant hook, peavey, log arch, winch, tractor, forks, ramps, or other suitable log-handling equipment.

Never rely on the sawmill itself to lift or reposition a log beyond the procedures described in the manual.

Portable sawmills are large, heavy machines and are shipped by palletized freight. A commercial delivery address is recommended. Freight-terminal pickup and residential or commercial liftgate service may also be available, depending on the selected checkout option and delivery location.

Inspect the shipment and packaging before accepting delivery. Note visible damage on the delivery paperwork, take clear photos, retain the original packaging, and contact BILT HARD Support promptly if components are damaged or missing.

Warranty coverage varies by sawmill model, engine manufacturer, and type of use. Eligible returns may be requested within 30 days of delivery, subject to the current return policy and product-condition requirements. When requesting technical, warranty, or replacement-part support, provide the sawmill model, SKU, proof of purchase, and clear photos or videos of the issue.
